8 Mistakes You are Likely Making on Your Website

In a study that evaluated thousands of websites they found that most websites keep making the same mistakes. It is likely that your website also is making these mistakes and it is costing you valuable clients. Making some simple changes to your website can greatly improve your website’s effectiveness and get you what you ultimately need, sales. Here are the most common, and avoidable mistakes that many businesses make when developing their webpage.

1. Your Header is Too Long

The heading is the first thing people see on your website and carries great importance. It takes someone less than 10 seconds to read your header and make a determination whether they want to stay on your site or leave. The header should be simple, clear and concise. Unfortunately, people often try to cram too much into their header and it overcomplicates things.

2. You are Using Insider Language

Your customer is not an expert on your product/service like you are. Don’t try to impress them with big, complex words that they will not understand. Instead your website needs to use simple and clear language that your reader will understand. Clarity is what will produce customers, not complexity.

3. Your Site is All About You

The customer is not usually on your page to learn about you or your business. They want to know how your product/service can benefit them. Stop making your website about your story, and start making it about their story. How can you add value to their lives and why will they be better off with your business?

4. The Images are Not Relevant to Your Product

The images you choose to have on your site make a big impression on your customer. You need to select images that fit with the words you are using and represent your business well.

5. The Call-to-Action Button is Only Seen Once on Your Homepage

A good website offers many opportunities for your customer to take an action step to giving you their business. As the viewer scrolls your page, they are gaining more information about your company. The longer they scroll the more interested they are. However, if your call-to-action button is buried way back up at the top of your site they are less likely to click on it. If your call-to-action button was repeated several times down the page, they are more likely to find it easily and click on it.

6. Your Call-to-Action is Too Passive

Passive language is not your friend on your site. Many people avoid strong call-to-action buttons because they are afraid on coming across as pushy. This is hurting your business and costing you customers. A strong call-to-action is necessary to get more people to turn from viewers to paying customers.

7. Slide Show Text Changes Too Fast

Just do yourself a favor and avoid the slide show of text and pictures on your page. While it may look nice, people rarely have the patience to wait through the slides to read all the text. Often, the text is too long to read in a short time and will easily be forgotten once the next slide comes along. An alternative to this element can be a slideshow where the pictures transition while the text is left unchanging.

8. The Site Does Not Produce a Lead Generator

If your site does not have a lead-generator on it, you may be costing your business valuable clients. A lead generator is a way for your business to collect information from your potential customers in exchange for something you offer them in return. This information is vital for you to connect with viewers and turn them into paying customers.
